On January 1, 2001, a fire broke out in cafe De Hemel (Heven cafe) in Volendam, where several hundred people were celebrating New Year's Eve. Sixty people suffered severe burns, and many of them died. In 2003, photographer van de Roemer made portraits of the survivors, and photographed them again in 2010.
